When you follow an artist's work for so many years, it becomes especially dear to you – indeed, you share in their success. And Georg Herold has certainly experienced many successful and glamorous moments, honors, and exhibitions. Now, having celebrated his 70th birthday in July 2017, he can look back on an impressive career and calmly curate a retrospective at the Kunstmuseum Bonn. Today, he is considered one of the most influential figures in international art of the last 30 years, partly because his work is characterized by an exuberant spirit of experimentation. The fact that he uses simple materials, as has often been discussed in reviews, that his work is full of ironic moments, that he constantly questions traditional forms of pictorial representation and especially sculpture itself – all this is true, but it should not obscure the view of a unique artistic development whose essential leap from the concepts of postmodernism to a modern artistic work freed from all conventions and, consequently, to absolute sculptural independence!
