Leyla Yenirce’s exhibition Fountain at Sfeir-Semler Gallery is set within a scene reminiscent of a living room. This interior, fitted with a sofa, table, water kettle, and tea for visitors to linger, is connected to the street and passersby through a projection on the window. The video, visible from inside and outside, captures a night at Washington Square Park. Reflecting on her work, Yenirce speaks of a moment, one closely linked to a certain experience of urban beauty and the paradoxical quality of this scene – at once a portrait of joyous gathering and one of neglected social space.

“On my way back, it was pouring and it was warm, so I walked through the rain. The streets were almost empty, my feet wet from the water. Walking through the puddles, feeling slightly disgusted by the dirt mixing into the soup through which my shoes were swimming, as I was making something out to be bigger than it was, in a moment when it was raining. And the lights, they looked so pretty and the buildings were so tall and there were so many people I didn’t know.” (Leyla Yernice)
