This painting takes its title from a poem by Anna Akhmatova (1889–1966), one of Russia’s most influential modern poets. Akhmatova’s deeply personal poetry, shaped by themes of love, loss, and political repression, became a lasting testament to resilience and endurance during the Soviet era. In "Completely Blind Red Wall (After Akhmatova)", Kantarovsky depicts two horses resting beside a building alongside an image of the Spas (Christ the Savior) from the Russian Orthodox tradition. Drawing on literary and religious imagery, the work explores themes of vulnerability, memory, and spiritual resilience. The painting reflects Kantarovsky’s ongoing engagement with history, symbolism, and the emotional afterlife of cultural narratives.
