Showcase: Ximena Garrido-Lecca

7 February - 10 April 2021
Overview

Capitain Petzel is pleased to present its first Showcase, a new series of exhibitions which will be viewable from outside of the gallery. Debuting the series is the artist Ximena Garrido-Lecca (b. 1980 in Lima, Peru, lives and works in Lima and Mexico City), with her monumental piece Gasa - entrelazado I.

This work from the series Aleaciones con memoria de forma explores the memory of artisanal tradition and the abandonment of rural spaces as an after effect of the processes of modernization. The series continues the investigation the artist initiated in 2013, through sculptures produced in metal (copper and bronze), intertwining the rawness of the metal with the warmth of Andean design patterns. The conjunction of both elements insinuates a permanent tension between the inheritance of vernacular culture and the new demands of industrialization. Through these works, the artist points to the processes of violence contained in an accelerated transnational economic model in which the protection of the environment, sovereignty, and the respect for different community lifestyles is constantly brought into confrontation.

In 2021 Ximena Garrido-Lecca will take part in group presentations at the Museo Madre, Naples, the Museo Jumex, Mexico City, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and the 34th Bienal de São Paulo. Other solo and group exhibitions include the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Lima (2019); Orange County Museum of Art, OCMA Expand, Santa Ana (2019); Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (2017); Kunstmuseum Bonn (2020); CRAC Alsace, (2017); Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, (2015); Saatchi Gallery, London (2010), among many others.
