A series of masks created by Yael Bartana for the performance Bury Our Weapons, Not Our Bodies!, shows human faces in the form of a shield. The starting point of the work was the appearance of the gas mask — a tool of protection. The masks are suggesting neo-tribalism movements, while also referencing the abstract masks created within the Bauhaus and Dada movements.
Yael Bartana blurs the lines between fact and fiction, calling to attention the function of weapons in the perpetuation of our systems of violence, repression, and displacement.
