Christopher Williams's use of photography is based on the premise of creating visual skirmishes through strategies of disclosure, deception, and feedback: the subjects shown act as proxies. The photograph’s immaculate composition, saturated backdrop, and precise lighting expose the conventions of commercial and art photography alike. Despite its apparent clarity, the image resists straightforward interpretation: the model’s pose recalls advertising, fashion, and art historical nudes simultaneously, while Williams’ clinical framing draws attention to the mechanisms of image production rather than the subject herself. As in other photographs featuring people, Williams leaves the “imperfections” that are often retouched in advertising language unchanged, even emphasizing them concisely: birthmarks, fine veins, or, as in this picture, calluses on the feet, all the while the bra is held together with yellow fold- back clips.
