Andrea Bowers‘ large pink cardboard assault rifles are a nod to the idea of a feminist army, as well as a protest against the U.S. government’s gun policies, with their painted slogans from the ‘March for Our Lives‘ protests, originally inspired by a CODEPINK action from several years ago. CODEPINK is a women-led grassroots organization working to end U.S. wars and militarism, support peace and human rights initiatives, and redirect our tax dollars into healthcare, education, green jobs and other life affirming programs.

The March for Our Lives (MFOL) was a student-led demonstration in support of legislation to prevent gun violence in the United States. It took place in Washington, D.C. on March 24, 2018, with over 880 sibling events throughout the United States and around the world, and was planned by Never Again MSD in collaboration with the nonprofit organization. The event followed the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida on February 14, 2018, which was described by several media outlets as a possible tipping point for gun control legislation.
