Tobias Pils is known for a deliberately process-driven approach in which an initial idea or motif is gradually transformed, derailed, or even dissolved during painting. In Stilllife, this method fosters an elusive interplay: recognizable still-life elements seem to surface, only to be obscured by layered texture, shifting shadows, and insistent mark-making, leaving a scene that is at once familiar and ambiguous. The restraint of color amplifies this uncertainty, while the quiet, slightly unsettling atmosphere speaks to Pils’s poetic exploration of liminal spaces.
Pils' commitment to this meditative, transformative practice is being foregrounded now in his solo show at Mumok, Vienna.
