During a month-long stay at the Troedsson Villa in Nikko, Japan, Sanya Kantarovsky developed a series of ink and watercolour studies, which were translated into an edition of woodblock prints through the expert craftsmanship of the Adachi Hanga printmakers. In the tradition of the ukiyo-e prints of the Edo period, which drew on Kabuki and Noh theatre, Kantarovsky's series indulges in pictorial drama. Looking closely at the work of masters such as Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Kantarovsky references a tradition of dark and satirical imagery through specific visual references - a bare foot emerges from under a robe, a seabird gazes indifferently at a gruesome attack, a child receives the restraining touch of its elders. These haptic themes are transformed through the subtlest opportunities of line and colour, scrubbed, veiled, layered and blurred with a persistent restlessness.
