The dogs in Landers’ paintings, are stoic figures, standing alert and by themselves in their boats, representing how vulnerable art is to an uncertain future. These pieces are very similar to Joachim Patinir's (d. 1524) picture, "Charon crossing the Styx", which depicts the transfer of a human soul by boat into afterlife.
