This painting is inspired by the research of writer and feminist activist Suzette Robichon on the life of Eva Kotchever. In the 1920s, Kotchever owned a Brooklyn tea house, distinguished by a sign at the entrance reading ‘Men are admitted but not welcome.’ The composition captures the reflection of a man peering into the tea house from the outside. A pervasive sense of melancholy permeates the artwork, prompting contemplation on historical practices that have systematically excluded individuals and groups from diverse social contexts.
