Born 1984 in New York, NY

Lives and works in Paris, France

Matthew Lutz-Kinoy works in painting, sculpture, printmaking, performance, and ceramics, often creating site-specific works that integrate all of these mediums. With a background in theatre and choreography, the artist employs historically rich techniques and methods of image-making to depict scenes influenced by the histories of queer identity and collaborative practices. His paintings highlight a fascination with the 18th-century style of carnal painting, known for its formal refinement and sophistication. Lutz-Kinoy’s performative practice explores the interplay of narratives that are created and constructed between individuals and social spaces.

Lutz-Kinoy’s recent solo exhibitions include The Kitchen and Dia Beacon, New York; Cranford Collection, London; Museum Frieder Burda | Salon Berlin; Vleeshal, Middelburg; Le Centre d’édition Contemporaine, Geneva; Le Consortium, Dijon; Indipendenza, Rome; MoMA PS1, New York, among others. The artist’s work has also been featured in recent institutional group shows at Singer Laren Museum, Laren; Festival of Contemporary Creation, Toulouse; Luma Westbau, Zurich; Centre d’édition Contemporaine, Geneva; Z33, Hasselt; Aïshti Foundation, Beirut; Centro de Creación Contemporánea de Andalucía, Córdoba; Tanzhaus Zürich, Zurich; Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, Paris; Geneva Sculpture Biennial, Geneva; Kunsthalle Zürich, Zurich; Musée régional d’art Contemporain, Sérigan; FRAC Nouvelle-Aquitaine MÉCA, Bordeaux; Sharjah Biennial, Sharjah; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

Collections include ADN Collection, Aïshti Foundation, Collection Consortium Museum, Cranford Collection, FRAC Nouvelle-Aquitaine MÉCA, Homestead Museum, KADIST Foundation, Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, Rennie Collection, S.M.A.K., Syz Collection, TBA21, and THE EKARD COLLECTION.

  • When we move through the world we are constantly adjusting our bodies in relationship to space. I began to understand this dynamic through dance, where the body is constantly vibrating against architecture and other bodies redefining itself. In my paintings I use this as a starting point to open a discussion on audience and scale.
