Monica Bonvicini

'Monica Bonvicini: Retrospective' (Sound Installation), Triennale Milano
November 20 – 22, 2026
A new event of SONDA, Voce Triennale’s format dedicated to artistic and sound experimentation in the form of installations. We present Retrospective by Monica Bonvicini, a visual artist whose practice investigates the relationships between space, language and structures of power. In the work, a voice recites around 2,000 titles of pieces created by the artist from the beginning of her practice in the 1990s to the present day, exploring the different forms a retrospective exhibition can take. Spanning three decades, this collection of titles highlights the artist’s conceptual use of language and her reflection on how art can be translated into language, or whether language itself can be considered art.

The artistic practice of Monica Bonvicini explores the relationship between architecture, power and gender, and the ways in which we perceive the spaces we inhabit.

Characterised by sharp humour and direct language, and rich in historical, political and social references, Bonvicini’s multifaceted body of work encompasses installations, sculptures, videos, sound works, drawings and more. Over the years, her approach has evolved formally without losing its analytical force or its tendency to challenge the viewer’s perspective, while questioning patriarchal and sociocultural conventions. Her work has been presented at major biennials, as well as in solo and group exhibitions at leading museums around the world. Her artistic practice has received numerous awards and includes several large-scale works permanently installed in public spaces.
