Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo presents a solo exhibition by Andrea Bowers, an American artist who lives and works in Los Angeles and whose practice has explored the intersection of activism and visual art for more than three decades. Through drawing, painting, installation and video, Bowers investigates issues of social justice and advocacy, bringing to light overlooked figures, stories and moments in the history of social struggles.
The exhibition focuses on the artist’s interest in ecofeminisms, with particular attention to the anti-nuclear feminist and disarmament movements of the 1980s. Alongside a selection of existing works, the exhibition features new productions, including a body of work dedicated to the Women’s Camp in Comiso, Sicily, established in 1983 under the name La Ragnatela (The Web). The initiative emerged in opposition to the installation of a NATO military base and in support of the nuclear disarmament movement.
New neon works, together with recurring formats in the artist’s practice – such as political ribbons and a cardboard work – inspired by La Ragnatela, are presented alongside rare archival documents from the 1980s, made available through the involvement of a network of activists and researchers. The exhibition thus reconstructs a historical network of transnational alliances and brings renewed attention to an important feminist contribution to the peace movement and the struggle for disarmament.
