The curator of this collaboration between Leyla Yenirce and the Konzerthaus Berlin, Sandra Teitge, will lead the tour from Yenirce's banners on the Konzerthaus facade into the Werner Otto Hall, where the three accompanying canvases are displayed. She will provide insights into the origins and process of this collaboration, the first of its kind, and shed light on Yenirce's artistic practice as a musician and painter.
Leyla Yenirce, a German-Kurdish artist and musician living in Berlin, paints the way she composes – intuitively and initially improvising, before finding a structured form.
“The canvas as concert hall” transforms lines and colors into sound, frequencies and sound into visual forms: an attempt to translate the collective listening experience, physically perceived by individuals, into painting.
Leyla Yenirce's musical canvas incorporates architectural elements of the concert hall building. Her focus, however, lies on the human gesture: the hand that touches an instrument, conducts it, and moves through the space. Yenirce works interdisciplinarily, working between painting, sculpture, video, and performance. Her works address a variety of themes, such as figurations of feminist resistance and media power structures.
Leyla Yenirce studied Fine Arts at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts and at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. Her work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the prestigious ars viva Prize, the Berlin Art Prize, and the Finkenwerder Advancement Award.
