The Polish Institute in Düsseldorf presents the first institutional solo exhibition of Mikołaj Sobczak in Düsseldorf. The exhibition brings together key works from different creative phases and offers a focused insight into his practice, which originates in painting and expands into video and performance works, often developed in collective constellations.
Sobczak questions the conventions of history painting in order to create alternative scenarios. In multifaceted, often surreal tableaux, he stages impossible encounters between real protagonists, thus shifting established narratives. In doing so, he places particular emphasis on queer and trans perspectives. The exhibition is intended as an invitation to reimagine history, to read the present differently, and to conceive of the future as an open space of possibilities.
