'Kunstkammer Gegenwart II' (Collection Display), Residenzschloss Dresden
November 29, 2024 – Ongoing

The Kunstkammer Gegenwart (Cabinet of Contemporary Art) complements the historical collections as a repository of knowledge and art with an archive of contemporary art. With annually changing themes, it offers insights into the extensive recent treasures of the Dresden State Art Collections.

Every autumn, new works are added to the "Kunstkammer Gegenwart" (Cabinet of Contemporary Art). Alongside the Hoffmann Collection donation, works from the Kunstfonds (Art Fund), the Kupferstich-Kabinett (Cabinet of Prints and Drawings), and the Albertinum are once again on display. For this purpose, designer Konstantin Grčić created a modular and flexible structure that evokes the feel of a storage facility. A demonstration workshop and accompanying educational programs make visible the activities that are part of the museum's mission of collecting, preserving, and communicating art, but which usually take place behind closed museum doors.

For the second year running, a central theme serves as the guiding thread in the selection from the extensive, including contemporary, holdings of the Dresden State Art Collections: the concept of "human." The interpretation of this adjective is multifaceted. It evokes empathy, but also the pursuit of power or fallibility. Thus, this year's exhibition of sculptures, paintings, prints, and video works focuses on the diverse artistic approaches to humanity. This concentration on "the human" also brings into focus the possible or impossible distinction from the "inhuman," not only in the sense of the monstrous, but also, for example, the divine or the artificial. In addition to the Hoffmann Collection donation, works from the Art Fund, the Kupferstich-Kabinett (Cabinet of Prints and Drawings), and the Albertinum are once again on display.
