Alexandra Metcalf

'Arcanes, rituals and chimeras', FRAC Corsica, Corte
June 4 - October 19, 2024

Included in the ucpoming group show at FRAC Corsica, 'The Rocking Woman' by Alexandra Metcalf references the Victorian trope of the mad woman in the attic, the depiction of which is executed with antiquated materials, namely locally sourced thonet wood from the iconic rocking chair that was commonly found in domestic settings of the time. The curvature of the wood is transformed into a grieving pregnant woman. Elements of stained glass are also inserted into the sculpture, further emphasising the artist’s interest in reinterpreting traditional methods of craft.
