Austin Martin White: The lie, the larp and the lusophile
-
Capitain Petzel is pleased to announce
The lie, the larp andthe lusophile, Austin Martin White’s second solo exhibition with the gallery, spanning its entire exhibition space. What happens when history slips into myth?
In his new exhibition, Austin Martin White explores the porous boundary between historical memory, cultural fiction and collective belief. Drawing on Brazil’s rich interplay of colonial history and popular image-making, White moves from the legendary Baroque sculptor Aleijadinho to the vivid tradition of literatura de cordel—tracing how images and stories shape our understanding of the past and, in an age increasingly defined by competing narratives, the present.

Austin Martin White brings together paintings and works on paper that extend his distinctive and unique visual language across painting, drawing and printmaking. Historical sources are fragmented and reconfigured, becoming something at once familiar and elusive. In White’s work, history is never fixed: it is continually rewritten through the images, stories and acts of imagination through which we construct—and believe in—the world around us.

Working with polyethylene film, screen mesh, pigment, rubber, vinyl, and spray paint, White creates layered surfaces that reflect the fragmented, mediated nature of historical narratives, inviting viewers to consider how stories are constructed, circulated, and ultimately believed.
