A continuation of his exploration of material language and bodily form, the artist turns familiar elements of fashion and design into a spatial and sculptural syntax. Composed of repurposed stiletto heels, interlaced leather belting, and steel fastenings, the work takes on the rhythm and curvature of a suspended, kinetic body. The arrangement of repeated black forms, radiating from a central axis, suggests both an architectural frieze and a frozen cinematic frame, a moment caught mid-motion.
O’Brien describes the work as a “choreography of interlocking gestures,” establishing a visceral relationship to the body, yet one that is also in motion. The articulation of the sculpture’s rhythm recalls cinematic stop framing, capturing movement in stillness. It relates to the recurring idea of the cascade in his practice. The small leather tags, punctuated by steel bolts, introduce a tension between ornament and structure, or a play with architectural detailing made corporeal and tactile. It is at once precise, sensual, and architectural.
O’Brien recently held solo exhibitions at Camden Art Centre, London and Kestner Gesellschaft, Hanover. His work will be part of a major forthcoming presentation at the Van Abbemuseum in 2026.
