"The nakedness of drawing is what I love so much." This quote by Philip Guston can be read on the back of the catalog of his drawings, which was published in 2005 to accompany the exhibition at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. In the catalog, Philip Guston, whose two wonderful drawings will also be on view in the exhibition, expresses the immediacy of the medium beautifully.
This intimacy of the mostly small formats also spills over to the viewer, who is allowed to see himself in front of the sheets like a voyeur, a secret observer. He gains a particularly intense insight into the cosmos, the creative process of the artist.
Drawing can be a very private medium, including or excluding the viewer. It serves the artist as a means to capture fleeting thoughts, to fathom visual worlds, but is also a completely independent medium and reaches the perfection of a painting.
