Karla Black: Sculptures 2000-2020 was the first carefully curated exhibition of Black's work in the United Kingdom. It was inspired by Black's invitation to viewers to consider the function of her sculptures before speculating on their potential meanings. It brought together recently created pieces created for and in The Fruitmarket Gallery with pre-existing sculptures chosen to exemplify the various types of art Black has been producing since 2000. Black used her knowledge of how people interact with the materials she uses to inform how people interact with space in the new pieces. In the bright and spacious upper gallery of the Fruitmarket, she worked horizontally, creating a colourful powder carpet on the ground. By hanging powdered and painted cellophane, she experimented with the height of the new warehouse area, in contrast.
