WADE GUYTON

Born 1972 in Hammond, IN

Lives and works in New York

Wade Guyton has over the last two decades produced an oeuvre that has made him a key figure of 21st century contemporary painting and abstract art. In his distinctive large-scale inkjet paintings, Guyton combines traditional media with digital processes by printing over catalogs and newspapers with his signature motifs such as black Xs and Us, flames, geometric shapes and stripes, or by manipulating images with scanners and digital programs. This process often creates unplanned slippages and mistakes — streaks or blurs, which comment on appropriation and copying, but also on our engagement with art and images in the digital age. His formally minimalist works are typically presented in series. Outside of his singular practice, he has produced work in collaboration with fellow artists Kelley Walker and Stephen Prina.

Wade Guyton has shown extensively in across the world and has had solo exhibitions at the Museum Ludwig, Cologne (2019); Museum Brandhorst, Munich (2017); Musée d’art moderne et contemporain (MAMCO), Geneva (2016); Le Consortium, Dijon (2016); Josef Albers Museum Quadrat Bottrop (2014); Kunsthalle Zürich (2013); the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2012); and Secession, Vienna (2011). He has participated in group exhibitions at Museum of Modern Art, New York (2019); The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (2017); Lenbachhaus, Munich (2017); Tate Modern, London (2015); and Moderna Museet, Malmö (2013) among many others. Wade Guyton is a recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Award in Art, 2014; the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, 2004; the Socrates Sculpture Park Emerging Artist Grant, 2003; the Artists Space Independent Projects Grant, 2002; the Delfina Studio Trust, London, 2000.
